World Leader’s latest edition “World’s Most Inspiring Women Leaders in Hospitality 2023” has featured women representing institutions and universities at the vice chancellor, dean and director positions is significantly low.  The cover features Maggie Hardy, the owner and CEO of 84 Lumber, leads one of the United States’ largest privately-owned building materials suppliers. The company, originally founded by her father, Joe Hardy, in 1956 in Eighty-Four, Pennsylvania, came under her leadership in 1992 when she was just 26 years old. Incredibly, the company achieved over $1 billion in sales the very next year.

Numerous international studies demonstrate that prejudices against women exist everywhere in the world. These prejudices, which impede women’s advancement in the workforce, are frequently systematic and deeply ingrained. They derive from the persistent perception that the ideal worker in the hospitality sector is still a man. The professional standing of women reflects this bias in a number of ways, including lower compensation, low-status positions at entry levels, stagnation in middle management, and challenges when they advance to board rooms and senior executive positions.

The apparent preference for males in top roles and women in more subordinate roles is one discernible trend in the hospitality sector. Research indicates that prevalent biases within the sector include the belief that women are incapable of handling the demands of long hours and night shifts, as well as maintaining a positive work-life balance. Cultural discouragement and developmental disparities are further barriers to women’s success in leadership roles. “World’s Most Inspiring Women Leaders in Hospitality 2023” has many names like Maggie Hardy who are leading in hospitality sector while changing the women leadership scenario in the industry.
