Describe your past journey and what did you do before started your company?
Started working from an early age, retail, sales, working in family business, decided to return to study and obtained a degree, worked in retail banking, worked my up to managing several branches, all the time continuing my passion for cooking and always trying and experimenting with new dishes, looking and learning, Got married in June & December 2012 – lucky girl had so many celebrations and events, first child in Nov 2023 a boy Rehan, had time off for maternity, returned to work, had second child in Oct 2014 a girl Evissa, returned to work, had opp to reduce hours, continued cooking, feeding, gathering people together and organising many parties and celebrations, all the while taking care of family, then we had covid…..tough but fun times at home with family, carried on cooking and trying different things, had chance to take redundancy in 2018..
What has made you successful? What do you value?
Being committed and having loads of perseverance, not giving up, going back to the drawing board time and again to get it right, support from family and friends, advice, and help from my sister I value honesty and doing what I say
Which are the major services of the company and how do the company to get ahead in the competition? What value-added services does the company provide?
The primary activity of the company is online retail, selling mySpike kits, seasonings, and accessories, and being active on social media to promote cooking with mySpike. Being the first and original vertical cooking tool, we have the advantage of having the most optimal design; we are original and designed with the customer in mind and ease of use. We also ensure there is minimum waste and impact on the environment from mySpike, Our seasonings and spice mixes are premium, carefully sourced, and blended to keep the additives and allergens free while still providing that authentic flavor. We are also innovative and recently launched a mini mySpike kit sized for use with air fryers, which is another world-first!
Our customer service and aftercare are as good as we can get, responding to customer contact and queries with urgency. We dispatch all orders on time.
To help our users I am regularly posting new recipes, how-to guides, and collaborating with others to provide fresh ideas and ways to use mySpike
What are the most important aspects of a company’s culture? What principles do you believe in, and how do you build this culture?
Being a small business and wanting to please everyone, I have a very strong work ethic, being relentless to get the work done and tasks completed. Managing my time and resources is crucial to mine and the business’s success.
What is the significance of innovative ideas in the company?
Huge! It’s how mySpike was born: creating a solution to a “problem.” Launching mySpike created a whole new cooking tool revolution. Today, there are many companies selling similar functional tools, but mySpike was the first, probably the best, and the one that always gives consistent results.
Being creative and thinking beyond the normal also allowed me to develop a range of seasonings that are universal and inclusive by ensuring they contain no artificial flavorings, colorings’, additives, or allergens so they can be enjoyed by everyone.
Innovation was also what resulted in mini mySpike kits. We saw an opportunity as so many people now have an air fryer in their kitchen. Mini mySpikes allow you to cook better and cleaner with an air fryer, and even the included mini tongs were a deliberate inclusion as we all know how much of a pain it can be removing cooked items from the basket.
Give us your opinion on; do organizations rely heavily on individual heroics or team processes?
Team effort and process always—my – mySpike was as a result of huge team (family and friends) effort—I could not have done it on my own.
What are your responsibilities as the Founder of the company? What is the happiest part of your daily routine?
Everything! Quality, design, selling, marketing, being present, ensuring consistency, not deviating from the goal of kitchen dominance, staying on task and track, and paying the bills. From a business aspect, it’s when I am preparing orders to be shipped out, or is it hearing the order received alert?
What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
For me, being a small business, it’s not easy to delegate to others, but staying in regular communication with all parties involved, be it to simply check you are on track or trusting others to get on with it, is important.
