A Historic Call
ITT’s narrative begins with a historic request – for its founders to create phones. The original International Telephone & Telegraph Company was founded in 1920 by two brothers named Sosthenes and Hernand Behn, who set out to develop the world’s first network of linked telephone lines. As the Puerto Rico Telephone Corporation, the company started modest but swiftly developed via smart acquisitions and the purchase of telephony patents. As a result, a large international provider of telephone switching equipment and telecommunications services was formed.
ITT is best understood as a collection of years. From 1960 to 1977, ITT bought almost 350 firms, including well-known brands like Sheraton hotels, Avis Rent-a-Car, Hartford Insurance, and Continental Baking, the creator of Wonder Bread. During that period, ITT expanded from a medium-sized company with $760 million in sales to a worldwide corporation with $17 billion in revenue.
Following the conglomerate years, ITT began restructuring the firm through strategic divestitures and acquisitions in order to arrange it into more manageable sectors. It culminated in 1995, when ITT was divided into three different, independent companies: ITT Corporation, which focused on the hotel and gambling industries; ITT Hartford, which became a stand-alone insurance company; and ITT Industries, which began as a collection of enterprises.
A decade later, ITT Corporation had been bought out, ITT Hartford had changed its name, and ITT Industries had continued to evolve. ITT Industries, which renamed itself ITT Corporation in 2006, was a key player in a number of critical areas, including water treatment and fluids management, worldwide military and security, and motion and flow control.
Pursuing Transformative Strategies
ITT has a reputation for adopting revolutionary initiatives to generate value for its shareholders. In 2011, ITT Corporation opened a new chapter by spinning off its water and defense-related businesses into three distinct publicly listed entities. ITT restructured in 2016 after five years of success, creating a completely new parent company, ITT Inc., a global, multi-industry maker of highly designed key components and tailored technological solutions for a wide range of transportation, industrial, and energy applications. ITT is well-positioned for sustainable development and value creation for customers, shareowners, and employees today and in the future, because to its continual focus on innovation, operational excellence, and superior customer service.
