Amazon Offers to Share Data, Boost Rivals to Dodge EU Antitrust Fines

According to people familiar with the situation, Amazon has offered to share marketplace data with sellers and increase the visibility of rival products on its platform in an attempt to persuade EU antitrust investigators to finish their investigations without a fine before the end of the year.

According to Reuters, the world’s largest online retailer is hopeful that its concessions will help it avoid a potential European Union sanction of up to 10% of its global revenue.

In 2020, the European Commission sued Amazon of abusing its scale, influence, and data to promote its own products and gain an unfair advantage over competitor online sellers.

Amazon’s apparent preferential treatment of its own retail offers and those of marketplace vendors who use its logistics and shipping services is also being investigated.

Amazon’s decision-making procedure for which retailers show in the “purchase box” on its website and generate the majority of its sales was also scrutinized.

According to the sources, Amazon has proposed allowing sellers access to some marketplace data while prohibiting its commercial arm from using seller data obtained by its retail business.

According to the sources, the corporation would also generate a second buy box for rival companies if an Amazon product shows in the first buy box.

According to the sources, the EU competition enforcer will seek comments from rivals and users in the next weeks, which might lead to changes to the proposal and a final decision by the end of the year.
